Discussion paper on non marine fishing livelihoods post tsunami in Tamil Nadu. Draft Feb. 2006
This draft manuscript –( to be issued shortly as an (SSFRDT – HiHTN) working paper – with funding support of Wetlands International). aims to provide a brief survey on non marine fishing livelihood restitution. The scope is restricted to coastal areas of Tamilnadu and Pondicherry , where the tsunami inundated agricultural land. It does not claim to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject, but merely a starting point for further discussion.
The SSFRDT and HiHTN carried out limited surveys and village studies in the coastal districts of Villupuram, Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Kariakal, Nagapattinam and Kanyakumari in January 2006. These initial findings and suggestions are in an informal format – which was arrived after a workshop to discuss the data collected, at the Madras School of Economics, with experts from various fields.. SSFRDT, together with HiHTN, is offering its services both as a source of technical information, and as a mediator for a forum on the topic. The overall aim is to help the recovery of livelihoods in agricultural areas affected by the tsunami.

This draft copy is intended for wide distribution among all those involved in rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in Tamilnadu state of India.
