3 more houses may fall prey to advancing sea

Even as the image of a blue house standing at a 45 degree angle on the sea shore in Nettukuppam continues to haunt us, three more houses are on the verge of falling into the advancing sea. Besides, foundations of another three houses have been exposed and it could be their turn soon.

Over the last month, the waves have taken over nearly 120 m of land as quick action was not taken by the Water Resources Department to construct a sea wall. The department had constructed around 80 m of sea wall and stopped work owing to paucity of funds. Work is now on to extend the wall further with Rs.1 crore from MP's Local Area Development Fund. Over the last one week, another 15 m have been added to the structure, residents said.

One side of Bhajanai Koil Street might be lost forever as Kasturi, Raja and Raman's widow would lose their homes. For a month now, residents of the fishing hamlet have been watching homes of Janaki, an elderly woman fish vendor , Ramesh and Gopi and a temple tumble into the sea one-by-one.
